Our story

Pale Blue Dot began as a home project. One of our founders got a 3D printer as a hobby project, and used it to make small knickknacks that were useful (a pair of chopsticks that clip onto your hand to eat chips whilst keeping your keyboard and hands oil free), some that were conversation pieces (a plant pot shaped like a parrot for a birdwatcher friend), and some that needed customisation to a level that was not readily available from the market (like a replacement bulb holder for an antique lamp). As he made more and more things, one of his friends suggested that he combine those three use cases into a single use case - a custom designed lamp, that was not available in the market already because of its complex design.

Thus, was born Studio Pale Blue Dot. We make pieces for your home that just… work. We believe that every home is a reflection of its residents, and that those residents want to fill their homes with items that serve fun yet functional purposes that are reflective of themselves, and want to express that individuality through pieces that are customised to them and their spaces. This means that each item that we make has a high degree of customisability - to ensure that what you bring into your home fits into the design and aesthetic of your home, not the aesthetic and the styling of the shop that sold it to you. 

Our process

We pick up fun aesthetics - be it shapes, flowers, activities, hobbies or even mathematics as a starting point. We experiment and play around to see what interesting shapes and light diffraction patterns we can create using those starting cues, and leverage the magic of 3D printing to iterate rapidly until we come up with base concepts for our lamps.

Then, we work with top interior designers to explore how best to translate those concepts into functional lamps across pendant, table, bedside and floor lamps, with a focus on usability, versatility and aesthetics. Then, because we 3D print our lamps, we are able to make the same design with multiple customisation options in terms of colours, sizes and components, all without the wastefulness, time or high upfront costs of traditional injection moulding or the low predictability and high cost of handicrafts. This results in a custom high quality product that can be delivered to you fast and at low cost - a win win for us, you and the planet!

Sustainability

Our lampshades and stands are all made of polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic. PLA that we source is made from agricultural refuse (primarily sugarcane husk and corn husk) and can be incinerated, recycled or industrially composted. The production of PLA is also more eco-friendly than traditional virgin plastic - it consumes >60% less energy to manufacture the same amount of PLA as compared to traditional plastic.
